4.9 describe experiments to carry out acid-alkali titrations

  • Have a known volume of acid in a beaker with methyl orange, the solution will be red as it is very acidic.
  • Set up a burette with alkali in it. Open the tap very slightly, so that it drips very slowly into the acid.
  • With each drop stir the contents of the beaker.
  • The more alkali that is added the more neutral and closer to orange it gets.
  • When the solution is neutral the it will be completely orange, at this point close the tap on the burette.
  • The level in the burette will have dropped, showing the volume of alkali used.
  • This shows you how much alkali you need to use to neutralise the acid.

  1. Did not have a clue about what we were doing when we did it in class, but this has helped me so much. Thanks!

  2. ...oh and by the way, hi Tim Bakare; I know you'll be reading this probably, so yeah, hi!

  4. "When the solution is neutral the it will be completely orange" - would it not be green if its neutral?

    1. no because methyl orange is orange in neutral solutions unlike universal indicator which is green.

  5. Make sure to record the starting level of the alkalai in the buirette ;) and I think titration is easier to tell when it is neutral when using universal indicator and it is more precise I beleive

  6. Actually it isn't as it can be difficult to see the exact point that the solution becomes neutral as it has many different shades of green. Methyl Orange is more accurate because it has a definite colour change

  7. Just saying methyl orange is not orange when neutral, it is yellow.
