5.27 describe the manufacture of sulfuric acid by the contact process, including the essential conditions

(stage 1) S + O2 > SO2 
(stage 2) SO2 + O > SO3
(satge 3) SO3 + H2O > H2SO4

  1. Stage 3 is wrong in this, if you just add water to the sulfur trioxide you get an uncontrollable mist of H2SO4.

    What you actually do is absorb the SO3 in sulfuric acid to create oleum (H2S2O7
    Then you add water:

    H2S2O7 + H20 = 2H2SO4
